Rice husk as an alternative to plastic: Tarragona launches a project with real impact

Rice husk as an alternative to plastic: Tarragona launches a project with real impact

Sustainability moves forward step by step, and sometimes, those steps are taken very close by. This week, the Generalitat of Catalonia announced a groundbreaking pilot project: fishermen in Tarragona and the Ebro will test boxes made from rice husk to transport fish. This initiative not only aims to reduce plastic use in the fishing industry but also to give new value to an agricultural waste that is abundant in the Delta.

These boxes, which will be distributed among the fishing guilds, are made with Oryzite, an innovative material that revalues rice husk and turns it into a viable, resistant, and far more sustainable alternative than conventional packaging.

A project close to our hearts

At Novsus, this news is not unfamiliar to us. Oryzite is not just the supplier of the material for these boxes; it is our strategic partner, with whom we have been working closely from the beginning to create sustainable packaging for cosmetic products. We share a common vision: waste is not the end of the cycle but the beginning of something better.

Our cosmetic packaging is made from the same material that will now be tested in the fishing industry. And this confirms that we are on the right path: one where sustainability becomes a real, scalable, and transversal solution.

Applied circular innovation

This project marks an important milestone: a public administration, a traditional sector like fishing, and an innovative company like Oryzite have joined forces to introduce a sustainable alternative to conventional packaging. The distribution of the first boxes in the ports of Tarragona represents a solid step toward a more circular and conscious model, showing that change is already underway and is entirely possible.

That is precisely what we also promote at Novsus: partnerships that create impact. It’s not enough to have good materials; you need a shared vision, commitment, and a will to transform entire industries.

Revolution from the unexpected

Rice husk, once considered a worthless byproduct, is now positioning itself as one of the great allies of the ecological transition. And it’s no coincidence: it’s abundant, renewable, and, thanks to Oryzite’s technology, now also useful.

But most importantly, Oryzite is not a passing solution. It is an innovation with both present and future. A technology that is here to stay, capable of transforming industries in a real, scalable, and sustainable way. What we’re seeing in the fishing industry is not an isolated test: it’s a preview of what’s to come. A model shift that’s not only necessary but inevitable.

At Novsus, we celebrate this initiative as a clear example that the transformation toward sustainable models is no longer a promise—it’s a reality. Every time a sector embraces alternative materials, it not only reduces its environmental impact but also triggers a chain of innovation that drives others to move in the same direction. Because sustainability is not a trend. It’s the direction we must all head toward. And with partners like Oryzite, we know this path is firmly grounded.
